What is Operating System (O.S.) ?

    An Operating System is a type of system software that manages computer hardware, software, resources and provides common services for computer programs. Other specialized classes of Operating Systems, such as embedded and real - time systems, exist for many application.

Why we use an Operating System ?

    An Operating System brings powerful benefits to computer software and software development. Without an Operating System, every application would need to include it's own UI (User Interface), as well as the comprehensive code needed to handle all low - level functionality of the underlying computer, such as disk storage, network interfaces and so on. Considering the vast array of underlying hardware available, this would vastly bloat the size of every application and make software development impractical.

What is System Software (S/W) ?

    System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. If we think of the computer system as a layered model, the software is the interface between the hardware and user applications. The Operating System is the best - known example of software. The Operating System manages all the other programs in a computer.

    Software is used to manage computer itself. It runs in the background, maintaining the computer's basic functions so users can run higher - level application software to perform certain tasks. Essentially, software provides a platform for application software to be run on top of.

Important features of system software

    Computer manufacturers usually develop the system software as an integral part of the computer. The primary responsibility of this software is to create an interface between the computer hardware they manufacturer and the end user. System software generally includes the following five (5)  features.

01. High Speed :- System software must be as
efficient as possible to provide an effective platform for higher - level software in the computer system.

02. Hard to Manipulate :- It often requires the use of a programming language, which is more difficult to use than a more intuitive U.I. (user interface).

03. Written in a low - level computer language :- System software must be written in a computer language the Central Processing Unit (C.P.U.) and other computer hardware can read.

04. Close to the system :- It connects directly to the hardware that enables the computer to run.

05. Versatile :- System software must communicate with both the specialized hardware it runs on and the higher - level application software that is usually hardware - agnostic and often has no direct connection to the hardware it runs on. System software also must support other programs that depend on it as they evolve and change.

Types of System Software

    There is two (2) types of software in computer system. Those are :- 
01. System software and
02. Application software.
System software is also known as operating systems (O.S.). Application software is known as apps/applications. If means the applications that we use in our system. In this part you will learn about system software (O.S.). There is twenty-four (24) types of O.S. Those are :-

01. M.S. Windows    13. M.S. - Dos

02. Linux                   14. Windows 7

03. MacOS                 15. Windows 8

04. Android              16. Cent OS

05. iOS                       17. Net BSD

06. Ubuntu               18. React O.S.

12. Solaris                24. Linux Mint
